The Surface Family has been in Kansas City Missouri since the mid 1800's.  John M. Surface our founder, he was born on a farm in Indiana in 1847, he resided there until the advent of the civil war, when at the age of 16 he enlisted in the 7th Indiana Regiment and served until hostilities ceased.  He took part in many notable engagements, among them being the Battle of the Wilderness, at which he was severely wounded, and Appomattox, where Lee surrendered to Grant.  Mr. Surface, had graduated, the University of Cork, Cork Ireland. He located in Eastern Jackson County in 1878.   The Surface farm and homestead is where Liberty Memorial stands today.   Jno. Surface practiced medicine  and engaged in the drug business, having stores at 18th and Lydia Ave., and 18th and Grand Ave.  Founded in 1884 John M. Surface and Son later known as Surface Paint Company, Inc span 107 years through four generations.

The opening of places of business had begun the accumulation of realestate.  Today the firm manages real estate in downtown Kansas City - CrossRoads, the Plaza area and industrial properties in Lenexa KS.
